20th April 2007 - Welcome to QLearning Print E-mail

Welcome to the QLearning forum. This is a niche forum of select educators from across India. So what does the forum do? Well, let me start by introducing myself.

Who am I?

I am Rajagopal, father of two adorable kids Aditya (8 yrs) and Alekhya (6 yrs). I am also an entrepreneur interested in finding ways to improve the way learning happens for the new generation of kids. With this intention, last year, I quit the “comforts” of a corporate job to start working on “mainstream-ing” tools and techniques that will enable better learning.

The Context

Education is a big business in India. Education – business, both words in the same breath? I am not as insensitive as that statement seems to make me. It definitely is a crude way of putting it, but there is nothing wrong in it. Education has to be one of the largest businesses in any society. It is a sign of society on the move, a sign of a hungry society, hungry to learn, hungry to reach higher, hungry to produce and achieve more. A large and thriving education system is a very positive and healthy aspect of a society. We, in India, should be very proud of the size of our education system.

Problem Statement

While there is still a need to increase enrollment, I think it is time we start focusing on the improving the quality of our system. Here a few questions that as participants in the system, we need to answer:

  • As a new batch of students graduate every year, how can we be confident that they are ready for the global knowledge economy of today?

  • How can we collectively improve our system of learning to match the requirements of the 21st century?

  • How do we see the system evolving to meet these needs?

  • In this complicated system, with many stakeholders (students, parents, teachers, administration and support staff, government and the list goes on) how can each participate and contribute better to the overall process of moulding young citizens of tomorrow?

  • What impact will technology have on the way we run the system?

The Intent

It will be my intent to share some of the innovative methods being followed across the world, as well as generate a healthy and thought provoking discussion in this weekly newsletter. I welcome your feedback, suggestions and input. I am also eager to hear your experiences and experiments in learning that you have undertaken at your institutes.

Please Note

I have taken the liberty to sign you up for this newsletter, but if you are not interested, you may please unsubscribe by clicking on the link below. On the other hand, if you are piqued by the topic and theme here, please feel free to forward and share it with your friends and colleagues.

Next week

"Campfires, Watering holes, Caves and Life". Believe me, it is an interesting perspective on methods of learning.

Game of the week: Meteor Multiplication at http://arcademic.altec.org/

Audience: Primary school kids

Theme: Let us make the multiplication tables fun. A fun game that indirectly forces kids to be spot on in getting their multiplication tables right.
